Environment

  • There are mainly three National Parks in Lebanon:
    1- Bentael near Byblos
    2- Ehden Forest
3- The island of rabbits near Tripoli (Marine wildlife Reservation-sponsored by the UN). Forbidden Access.

  • The ban on bird hunting is still in effect in Lebanon.

  • AUB started a program to reestablish the Lebanese eagle in the wild. The program will extend soon to include other animals that are vanishing in Lebanon-Thanks to ruthless hunters.

  • The scandals on toxic waste dumping in Lebanon are still surfacing. Greenpeace, which has its regional office in Beirut, is still uncovering scandals about coverups by Lebanese officials who are cashing on destroying our nature and environment. Greenline, with the support of other Lebanese green groups, is joining hands with Greenpeace to uncover the murderous acts of those officials who vowed the protection of the nation and its people (what's new!).

  • Environmental trouble spots in Lebanon are increasing at an alarming rate. Eco groups are doing all they can, but are always stalled by slow bureaucratic governmental procedures. Of course, in Lebanon, it takes forever to make a change that does not generate immediate cash. Here is a brief list of the trouble spots: the dying cedars of Lebanon, the deforestation, the electric power plant in Zouk and its fumes, the cement factory in Shekka, the toxic waste dumping all over Lebanon (Tripoli, Bourj Hammoud, and especially Kesrouan), the pollution of the whole national underground water reservoirs, etc. Believe me the complete list is a lot more extensive.

  • To the pleasure of many people, including myself, birds are seen flying again freely in the hills around Beirut and throughout the country. In September, hunters staged a sit-in in Beirut protesting the continuing ban on their "innocent" habit.Let them suffer!
